This month we started planning on building a new rudder, repaired the hatchboard, bought a 3-blade propeller to replace our 2-blade propeller and serviced the winches.
Friday 7th - 9th April 2017 Mattis, along with 3 others sailed 'Integrity', a 43' Gentleman's Cutter from Plymouth to Mount's Bay (approximately 66nm) and back. They found some dolphins along the way... We lightly sanded and waxed the cupboards and cupboard fronts with beeswax. The cupboard fronts are now back on after completing other jobs, such as cutting out the webs, fibreglassing and replacing the chainplates. Below are the before and after pictures...
24th April 2017
Last weekend, Mo completed an RYA Sea Survival course. This week, Mattis has been making the new rudder, out of Norwegian spruce and Mo polished the gelcoat, getting Jingo ready to go back in the water. Mo also sanded the fibreglass in the quarter berth and painted it. It was the first time it's seen paint in nearly forty years. The quarter berth was now looking a little bit more comfortable for sleeping in when we're on our watches.

12th - 17th March 2017 What a great month so far! Mo completed her Day Skipper Practical with Torbay Sea School, on 'Nashira', a Bavaria 36. Mo and two others, Chris and Tim along with Chief Instructor Symon, sailed from Brixham to Dartmouth, Blackpool Sands to Salcombe and then back to Brixham. A brilliant week of learning how to sail. Sunday 19th March 2017 Mattis has been investigating the rudder as there'd been a reverberating noise going up through the rudder stock when the engine is running.... 22nd - 23rd March 2017 On the 22nd March, Mo made her first yacht delivery. She and instructor Charlie from Torbay Sea School were picked up by the new owners of 'Dolly' a 1970's Sadler 25 and drove them from Brixham to Brighton. Dolly had just been fully refurbished and the new owners were excited to see her on the other side, back in Brixham. Mo and Charlie waited for the winds to die down and they set off about 4pm. At around midnight and onwards, the weather turned slightly worse than what was forecast the day before and they were now expecting with Force 6/7 across Lyme Bay and it was around Force 4/5 by the time Mo and Charlie got back to Brixham at 6pm, 23rd March, 150nm and 26 hours later. What a great sail down the coastline.
Saturday 4th February 2017 This was a very exciting weekend for us, as we were going to install our new Facnor roller furler. On Saturday 4th, Mattis was winched up the mast and we fed the halyards through the mast. The weather turned quite windy by Saturday afternoon with lots of rain, so we headed home and returned early the next day. Sunday 5th February 2017 We spent the day installing our roller furler as the wind had died down. Once it was fitted, we realised that the foils were slightly too long. After some time thinking about what to do and what was the best way to take off the extra length of foil, Mattis was winched up the mast again and he sawed off the required 20cm of foil from the top. This was to ensure that we had the right length for our genoa which we should have in the next month or so.
Jobs to do in January - Order and install all LED light bulbs, including mast light - Paint the inside lockers where webs were glassed in (ready for chainplates to be installed) - Install upper and lower chain plates - Sand the hull and put on new antifoul ready for the next season - Repair the rudder - Sand, oil and re-install capping rail - Put mast back in - Tune new rigging - Install roller furler - Jingo is ready to be put back in the water 20th January 2017 This week we completed the following: - Attached new rigging to mast - Finished putting in the chainplates - Grinded down and epoxied rudder - Sanded and painted lockers - Tidied
We winterized our engine.
Sunday 27th November 2016 We spent our time finishing the buffing and waxing of Jingo's hull and began sanding back and oiling the wooden frames in and around the cockpit. We bought 50 metres of 8mm anchor chain with 50 metres octoplait nylon. All new standing rigging with 'Facnor' roller furler ready for collection. This month we have had quotes for a new genoa and mainsail service, we've also buffed and polished the hull, removing any oxidation and bringing Jingo's colour back to it's true form. Utterly amazing how Jingo is nearly 40 years old and her colour is still as bright. We also glassed in new webs to renew and provide a thicker support for the new chainplates.
Mattis had a week off week to work on Jingo and make progress on our list of jobs to do before April 2017. On 1st September, Jingo was lifted out of the water for the winter months. Once out of the water, we scraped off all the barnacles from the hull. During September we tried to get our 1979 depth sounder to work, but without success. We hoped to get it working so that we could use as much of Jingo's original equipment as possible. Our mast was pulled and we detached our old standing rigging in preparation for our new standing rigging. 17th September was the start of the Southampton Boat Show and we bought a 50 watt solar panel with controller, an EPIRB and heavy weather sailing gear.
Rebedded a leaking portlight and replaced both hatch lens'.
We took out one of our portlights as it was leaking, scraped off the old sealant and refitted it with new sealant. |
